What happens when CA hinges get old ! Extra 300 crash

Post by solentlife » 30 Apr 2015, 22:04

Saldus, 26th ....

Fire up the 61 .. all good ... check controls ... open throttle .... she rolls nice, takes off clean .... then I pull up to climb more steep - BHAM ! Elevator hinges fail.

They are the original CA Hinges fitted to the model .... how old ? No idea. But I did have trouble with rudder before ...

CA hinges can and will harden with the ageing CA and get brittle. The Extra's CA hinges just cracked and broke ... as she crashed (I had time to shut throttle) - I could see the elevators hanging of.

OK ... pick up the bits .... take them home.

Strip to see what can keep .. what to replace ..

My Laser Cutter was an advantage - I could scan and cut new formers to rebuild sections.

The full reconstruction story is :

With ongoing updates as work progresses ....

So people - CHECK YOUR HINGES !! Please do not have same trouble as me !!

Karina told me about Cirava - so I hope to be there.

The Extra is not too bad - but will first check she flies good before buying new canopy. I have new cowl ready.

I like mylar strip and fit with epoxy. Final to add pin vertical through model and hinge as security.

Decided to take your advice - Uldis.

I have plenty of the 'pin' single point hinges you link to. Each elevator is getting 3 hinges.

Bison 5 min Epoxy .... I must be one of the biggest buyers of it !! I often empty the shop of it !

I also buy BISON PU Timber MAX, Exterior version in Yellow bottle. Much cheaper and same as Gorilla Glue.

Extra is fully ready now ...
