Wednesday 5 November : Took Cessna, Extra 300, Pitts S2C.
Cessna had radio problem and crashed. This is old model and will sit waiting decision to repair or not.

Next flew the Pitts - at Cirava, we saw that engine ran hot. I opened fuel little more today and had perfect flight.

The Extra 300 was very hard to start. But finally she started and we had chance to fly. But model does not stay still on ground. Propeller is too big and idle speed still pulls her along ground. I tried catching her when I tripped and fell to hands and knees on concrete.
Uldis (Ventspils) helped with getting her in air.

Uldis (Kuldiga) - YES - correct - the engine is too small in power and the fitting of large propeller to compensate by previous owner gives problems. Too much thrust at idle, not enough at full throttle.

She flew and manoeuvres were tried. Very slow through rolls, vertical is possible but no reserve of power. Landing was good, but had to turn her of runway onto grass to get her to stop.

I think a smaller propeller is needed to reduce thrust at idle, let engine speed up at full throttle.

Looking forward to more flights to learn her habits !

Nigel

Hi, Nigel!
Max rpm? I think , maybe Extra try with a smaller propeller pitch, don,t changing diameter.
It shold attach trhust and reduce the landing rate .

Landing speed is fine ... she floats down nice ...

Problem is on the ground - she will not stay still. Model is very light, prop has a lot of thrust at idle. Grass is fine, concrete / ashphalt is too smooth and she runs !

Low end carb adjustment screw should be leaned out a little, that allows to close the throttle further, thus reducing idle RPM without stalling the engine. Installing a smaller prop is somewhat childish solution. Any engine/prop combo can be set up so that idle is low, reliable, and model is stationary or close to that.

Here's the flight I had today ... still sorting things out before exploring envelope with her.

https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=oqn9hm3x3sU

You can see on take-off and landing - she runs on ... that prop just dragging her forward.

At least after a few adjustments and tweaks - I've got her roll rate up ... her elevator sensitivity pulled back. She actually flies quite well ... but 3D will never be.

I agree in normal circumstance ... but this model is extremely light and has a large high thrust prop fitted. The model is primarily electric with Glow conversion kit. Electric of course allows engine to be full stopped and on demand - manual says 14x7 .. 15x8. No problem with electric. But same on a glow and she is not stationary on ground.

I have been checking specifications and the 14x7 propeller on the OS-FL70 - is seriously restricting the motors full RPM. So will try a 13x6 propeller on her - see if the top power improves.

Weather does not look too good for next days ...
